Knowing your communication style and understanding the communication style of those you want to influence, motivate or engage is critical. It can help you understand types of communication that irritate you, engage you, while also gaining a better understanding of the communication styles of others and hope to build more powerful, transparent communication.
Two Task Focused Styles of Communication (Doers and Thinkers)
Task Oriented Doers:
· Like to be in control
· Will try to get to the point as soon as possible
· Like autonomy, freedom
· Enjoy a good challenge
· Like taking risks
· Are energetic self starters
· Like recognition
· Pride themselves on being action and results oriented
Task Oriented Thinkers:
· Information gatherers, who must read every detail
· Can be introspective, and like to cross every I and dot every T.
· They will take time to weigh every detail before making a decision, but once the decision is made they will stick with it.
· Do not like to discuss personal issues, emotions, or small talk.
· Enjoy discussing details
· Need clear expectations, specific goals, deadlines and structure because their world is one of methodology and order.
Two Relationship Styles of Communication: (Infleuncers and Connectors)
Relationship Oriented Influencers:
· Enjoy people
· Friendly, creative, fun loving persuasive
· Optimists, humorists
· Often passionate about life and work
· Like to process thoughts by thinking out loud with others
· Have a tendency to interrupt others, especially when they are excited about a topic or idea
· They do not view interrupting others as a disruption, but as conversation
· Self motivators who can work well without a rigid structure, but often need help to stay on track and follow through with tasks
· Consumate rapport builders, who help others through difficult times by building rapport
Relationship Oriented Connectors:
· They count on others to set the tone and determine direction
· Consistent and reliable once given their responsibilities, but they need structure and direction.
· Need time to develop trust and to allow new people to enter their group
· Like to work with others rather than alone, but they will not readily give their opinions
· Diligent, dependable
· They like to be asked what they know
· Enjoy recognition privately and not in front of others
· Desire consistency, social bonds and acknowledgment for effort as well as results
· Can appear very stubborn, but they can be flexible and adaptable if they understand why changes are being made and how these changes will benefit themselves and others
· Seek to reduce stress and promote harmony
